Construction Guide [ Prior to Construction ]

When building any wall check your local council by-laws regarding height and backfill restrictions. This is important as any wall designed for retaining purposes should be strengthened by thickening the base of the wall.

Measure out the area allowing for some of the Block to form the base of the wall and be buried. As a rule of thumb walls of varying height can be averaged over the length of the wall to calculate quantities. Also allow for breaks in the wall where gates and steps are required.

eg. A wall 10 metres long starting from the ground at ½ a metre and finishing at 1 metre would require approximately 50 off 500 x 350 x 240 blocks (ie. 20 blocks each course x 2 courses plus 10 blocks of 1 course of a 350 high block allowing for the first block to be buried 35cm).

Prepare the ground by compacting the area upon which the wall will sit. Attempt to level this base as best as possible. Consider drainage fissures where ground levels may vary and the land slopes towards the wall.

Checklist

  1. Spirit Level
  2. Trowel
  3. Wheelbarrow
  4. Board or tin sheet or mixer to mix concrete
  5. String Line
  6. Cement
  7. Sand
  8. Lime (if required in mix)
  9. Blocks
  10. Masonry Cutting Device (eg. Angle Grinder)

Cement Mix

An ideal mortar mix is:

6 parts course yellow brickies sand
1 part cockburn hi-lime
1 part cockburn creme cement.

An alternative is :

3 part yellow brickies sand
1 part cockburn brickies lite

Always use accurate measuring vessels when mixing by volume (eg. Bucket not shovel).

Construction

Stretcher Bond

Any wall over 1 block high should be built using Stretcher Bond pattern as seen on many walls and houses.

Stretcher Bond

Random Bond

Walls designed for random bond should be constructed using standard half and quarter sizes for this purpose.

Retaining Wall

Walls designed to retain are to be built to specification using the following indicative guide:

Retaining Wall

Notes

  • Wall base width:
  • All joints to be cement bonded
  • Clean backfill only
  • Compacted to 6 blows/300 min
  • No rubble to be used
  • Step wall outside angle of repose
  • All joints to be cement bonded
  • Clean backfill only
  • Over 1m in height must be engineer designed
Height Base Width
900 650
1200 850
1500 1000
1800 1200

Joints

Stones should be laid on a full bed or mortar. Place enough mortar onto the block so that it will rest at the required joint gap after being placed.

It is recommended that rolled joints be used to a depth of 1/2 the joint width on all bevelled blocks and on walls where a clean finish is required. Flush joints can be achieved where the look of blending the mortar into the block is required to give a more rustic appearance. Be careful not to put too much mortar on when creating flush joints as this may severely reduce the amount of the block showing.
