Which is better for a kitchen benchtop, marble or granite?

Granite is the better all-round kitchen benchtop because it is harder, more heat resistant and lower maintenance than marble. Marble is the better choice when looks matter most and the kitchen sees lighter use, since its veining is prized but it scratches, etches and stains more easily. For a busy family kitchen, granite is the safer pick.

Do marble and granite benchtops need sealing?

Yes, both are natural stone and need sealing. Granite is typically resealed every 12 to 18 months, and some dark granites rarely need it. Marble is more porous and acid-sensitive, so it should be sealed every 6 to 12 months and wiped quickly after contact with acidic foods like lemon, vinegar or wine to reduce etching.

Does marble stain and etch easily?

Marble stains and etches more easily than granite because it is softer (around 3 on the Mohs scale) and reacts with acids. Acidic liquids leave dull etch marks on polished marble, and oils can stain unsealed stone. A honed finish and prompt cleaning reduce the problem, but some patina is normal on a marble benchtop over time.

Is marble or granite more expensive?

Marble is usually more expensive than granite, especially sought-after stones like Calacatta and Carrara, though premium granites can cost as much as marble. The final price depends on the slab, thickness, edge detail and installation, so the only accurate figure is a quote on your specific kitchen.
