A cut-to-size stone fireplace hearth costs roughly $375 to $995 in Australia as at August 2026, based on published supplier prices. A 20mm bluestone hearth at 1500 x 500mm lists around $375 plus GST, a 1800 x 500 x 30mm honed bluestone hearth around $595, and a 1650mm Carrara marble hearth around $995. Installation is quoted separately.
Those are supply prices for the stone itself, cut and edged. What actually lands on your quote depends on four things, and one of them can cut the cost substantially.
- Published Australian hearth slab prices run about $375 to $995 (August 2026), supply only.
- Bluestone and standard granite are the affordable end; marble and figured natural stone the upper end.
- Stepping from 20mm to 30mm thickness adds roughly $25 to $45 on standard sizes.
- Installation is quoted separately. It depends on access, substrate, removal of the old hearth, and slab weight.
- A benchtop offcut is often large enough for a hearth and is the cheapest route to genuine stone.

What does a stone hearth actually cost?
Australian suppliers publish hearth prices by material, size and thickness, which makes this one of the easier stone products to price before you call anyone. The table below collects published listings as at August 2026. Treat them as a market reference point, not a quote. Every hearth is cut to a specific opening.
| Hearth | Size | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Bluestone, 20mm | 1500 x 500mm | ~$375 + GST |
| Bluestone, 30mm | 1500 x 500mm | ~$400 + GST |
| Natural stone, cut to size | Custom | ~$380 to $420 |
| Black granite, honed | Rectangular | ~$510 |
| Bluestone, honed 20mm | 1800 x 500mm | ~$550 |
| Bluestone, honed 30mm | 1800 x 500mm | ~$595 |
| Carrara marble | 1650mm | ~$995 |

What changes the price?
Four variables drive the number, in order of impact.
The stone. Bluestone and standard granite sit at the bottom of the range; marble and figured natural stone at the top. The gap between a bluestone hearth and a Carrara marble hearth of similar size is roughly $600 on published prices, the largest single swing in the whole exercise.
The size. Hearths are priced by the piece, and the piece is set by your fireplace opening plus the code minimums. Going from 1500 x 500mm to 1800 x 500mm adds around $175 in published bluestone pricing. Since the National Construction Code sets minimum extents of 300mm in front of the opening and 150mm each side, the size is only partly a matter of taste. Our hearth size and clearance guide has the full figures.
The thickness. Modest. Published listings show 20mm to 30mm adding about $25 on a 1500 x 500mm hearth and about $45 on a 1800 x 500mm one. Thickness is more a design decision than a budget one.
The cut and edge. A straight rectangle in a standard size is the cheapest outcome. Curved fronts, mitred edges, notches around a masonry breast and non-standard shapes all add fabrication time.

Why isn’t installation included in the price?
Because installation cost is site-specific in a way the stone is not. It depends on access to the room, what the hearth is bedded onto, whether an old hearth or tiled base has to be removed first, and how the slab gets there. A 1800 x 500 x 30mm stone hearth is a two-person lift, and stairs, tight corners or a first-floor fireplace change the job materially.
That is why reputable fabricators quote hearth installation after a measure rather than from a photo. Premier Stone quotes hearths after templating; we do not publish a fixed install rate because it would be wrong more often than right.
The cheapest way to get a genuine stone hearth
Use an offcut. A hearth is typically 1500 to 1800mm long and 400 to 500mm deep, inside the size of many benchtop remnants left over from a kitchen job. If you are already having stone benchtops fabricated, asking whether the remnant will yield a hearth is the single highest-value question you can put to your stonemason.
It also solves a design problem. A hearth cut from the same slab as the kitchen benchtop ties two rooms together with a material match that cannot be bought separately, because slabs vary batch to batch. For a wider view of material pricing, see our stone benchtop cost guide for Melbourne.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a stone fireplace hearth cost in Australia?
Published supplier prices run from about $375 to $995 as at August 2026. A 20mm bluestone hearth at 1500 x 500mm lists around $375 plus GST, and a 1650mm Carrara marble hearth around $995. Installation is quoted separately.
What makes one hearth cost more than another?
The stone, the size, the thickness, and the edge and cut work. Bluestone and standard granite sit at the lower end, marble at the upper end. Going 20mm to 30mm typically adds around $25 on a standard size.
Is installation included in a hearth price?
Usually not. Published prices are supply only. Installation depends on access, the substrate, removal of any old hearth, and slab weight. An 1800 x 500 x 30mm hearth is a two-person lift.
Is bluestone or granite cheaper for a hearth?
They are close, and both sit at the affordable end. Published listings show bluestone hearths from about $375 and a honed black granite hearth around $510. Marble and figured stone cost more.
Can I use a benchtop offcut for a fireplace hearth?
Often yes, and it is the cheapest route to genuine stone. Hearths are typically 1500 to 1800mm long and 400 to 500mm deep, within the size of many benchtop remnants. The stone must still be non-combustible and meet code extents.
Does a thicker hearth cost much more?
No. Published listings show 20mm to 30mm adding about $25 on a 1500 x 500mm hearth and about $45 on an 1800 x 500mm one. Stone type and total size matter far more.
