Stone waterfall edge island benchtop by Premier Stone in Melbourne

A waterfall edge benchtop is where the stone runs over the end of an island and continues down to the floor, so the surface appears to flow down the side. It’s the signature look of a feature island, a sculptural finish where the veining wraps the corner. It uses extra slab plus mitred-corner fabrication, so it adds to the cost, and it works in both 20mm and 40mm.

The waterfall island is one of the most requested features in Melbourne kitchens, and for good reason: it turns a beautiful slab into the centrepiece of the room. Here’s how it’s made, what it costs, and how to design it.

What is a waterfall edge?

On a standard island the benchtop stops at the edge and the cabinet sides are visible below. On a waterfall island, the stone turns the corner and runs vertically all the way to the floor, hiding the cabinet and creating one continuous sheet of stone. The vertical panel is cut from the continuing length of the same slab and mitred at the corner, so the grain or veining flows down the side.

How much does a waterfall benchtop cost?

A waterfall edge costs more than a standard island for two reasons: the vertical panels are extra square metres of slab, and each corner needs a precise mitred join so the veining lines up. As a general guide, budget the extra slab area plus the mitre fabrication on top of the benchtop price. The exact figure depends on the stone and the size of the island, and a measured quote captures it. See our stone benchtop cost guide for the full picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a waterfall edge benchtop?

A waterfall edge is where the benchtop stone runs over the end of an island and continues vertically down to the floor, so the surface appears to flow down the side. It’s most common on islands and can be done in any stone or porcelain.

How much does a waterfall benchtop cost?

It adds to the cost because it uses extra slab plus a mitred join at each corner so the veining lines up. Budget the extra slab area and the mitre work on top of the benchtop price; a measured quote captures the exact figure.

Is a waterfall benchtop still in style?

Yes. The waterfall island remains a popular, timeless feature because it shows off a beautiful slab. It pairs especially well with veined stones like marble-look porcelain, Taj Mahal quartzite or a striking granite.

Can you have a waterfall edge on a 20mm benchtop?

Yes. A 20mm waterfall reads sleek and modern; a 40mm mitred top with a waterfall side looks more substantial. The thickness is about the look and budget.

Does the veining match around a waterfall corner?

On a well-fabricated waterfall, yes. The vertical panel is cut from the continuing slab and mitred so the veining flows down the side, a hallmark of skilled fabrication.
